Kilronan Irish Draughts - 2006

July/August 2006 - Three of the neighborhood boys have asked to come over help with the horses. They are McCoy (11 years old) and Dillon (8 years old) Douglasson and their cousin Brian (11 years old). They come in the evenings at feeding time and help clean and bed stalls, clean and fill water buckets, and then measure feed, supplements, wormer, and garlic powder for each horse. They have learned how to put on and take off a halter, lead a horse, feed horses, clean stalls, clean and fill water troughs and buckets, wet down horses when there is 100 degree heat, and brush horses. They have started learning the parts of a horse; so far we have started at the top of the head and have worked our way down to the hoof on the front end of the horse.

3 July 2006 - Lovettsville Fourth of July Parade. Kilronan Irish Draughts had two horses in the parade which started around 5:30 PM. Kilbline (Molly) was ridden by Michelle Robbins and Tulla Gold (who belongs to Guy DeCorte) was ridden by Brad Taylor. Both horses were decked out in Red, White & Blue, manes braided with red, white, and blue ribbons; big red, white, and blue ribbons around their necks and in their tails. Molly's headband had attached to it a red, white, and blue 'God bless' and Tulla's headband had attached to it a matching red, white, and blue 'the USA'. Both horses were marvelous ambassadors allowing kids and grownup to approach for pets and attention. Directly in front of the horses were two of the neighborhood kids Brian and McCoy who each held a banner. Brian's read 'Kilronan Irish Draughts' and McCoy's was two large matching red, white, and blue buntings. We followed the Go Carts with kids driving, revving their engines, and throwing candy to the crowds. Ever time the parade stopped, Brian and McCoy set down their banners and came back and fed Molly and Tulla from a stash of carrots kept in their pockets. The only moment of concern was when Molly (who was on loose reins) bent her head down and scooped up a Reese's peanut butter cup and ate it wrapper and all.

11 June 2006 - Upperville Colt and Horse Show. Kilronan Irish Draughts has the most blessed of days; we did well and had fun doing it. You know with just Larry and I and five horses to show we do not have enough handlers for all the horses, so our philosophy has been to ask friends to help out. Thank God that we have enough friends who lovingly give their time to make this happen for us. So for over a month, early on Saturday mornings you would see Francesca Wertheim, Shelly Parks (and sometimes her Mom (Susan), Boyfriend (Will) and puppy (Belle)), Brad Taylor, Michelle and Larry with the gang straggling up to the ring to practice our In-Hand skills. The fun part was trying to teach the colts to lead quietly and follow their Moms around the ring. Thank God also that Molly is an old hand at this and we could actually drop the lead line in the sand and tell her to stand (and she did each and every time) so that two of us could work on getting one or more of the colts to move. Many thanks to Francesca, Shelly, Susan, Will, Brad and Belle for their support it really paid off.

Pure Bred Irish Draught Champion Upperville Colt & Horse Show 2006 - Kilbline.

A contingent of neighborhood kids came to watch the colt foals at their first show. You should have heard the shouts and clapping when Harley received his blue and Stony received his yellow ribbon. These two colts already have their own fan club.

3 May 2006 - all the horses are home. Harley is into everything and everyone; he is not in the least bit timid. He is very independent and does not hesitate to leave his Mom to go exploring. Stony follows where ever Harley leads. For a while there I was worried that Harley was picking on Stony too much, until Larry reported seeing Harley lying down with Stony standing on him and chewing on his ear. The neighborhood kids stop by when they get off their school bus in the evenings, they line the fence to visit and pet Harley and Stony.

2 May 2006 - Bridon Loughlara (Josey) is bred to Braveheart. We decided to breed our Josey to our Kilbline's (Molly's) son Braveheart by O'Leary's Irish Diamond. Debbie Fullilove is Braveheart's Mom and I think that I can safely say that we are all looking forward to seeing what the good Lord has in store for this foal.

25 April 2006 - Kilbline (Molly) is bred to Glenlara. Larry finally convinced me that I can ride and hunt Little Gem this year so we have bred Molly to Glen. We can not wait to see this foal and are praying for filly. If the foal is a filly our intention is to keep her as a replacement mare for Molly who is currently 13 years old.

18 April 2006 - Kilronan's Glenstone was born, barn name is 'Stony'. Little Gem gave birth two weeks after Josey, and as you know she is a lot smaller than Josey. About 2:00 AM on the foal alert went off, the vet (Dr. Ellen Stevens) realized right away there were problems and inserted a tube/hose down the foals nose to keep air flowing into his lungs. She had to call a couple of different people before she got a response and the gentleman (Nacho) from across the street came up and helped pull this very large foal out. He got stuck at the shoulders and then again at the hips. Mommy and baby are both fine. However, we are not breeding Gem this year; she will have this year off and be my riding horse. Stony's sire is Glenlara and we think he will be a dark liver chestnut in color (the tips of his ears are a very dark brown) with a blaze that goes from the tip of his nose to the middle of his forehead where it ends in a dancing white flame. His legs are the opposite of Harley's, Stony's two front legs have stockings and one hind leg has a bit of a white sock. Stony has the most mesmerizing canter when out playing in the small field, so slow and precise, but when we let them out in the big field he and Harley like to tear through the sand/bluestone ring at 90 miles an hour. Stony is so very, very fast and he never looses his balance. He is one of those foals who always know where his feet and legs are.

4 April 2006 - Kilronan's Image arrives, barn name to be 'Harley'. Bridon Loughlara (Josey) delivered a healthy baby boy; the colts' sire is Moorpark Image. We took Josey to foal camp, as my husband calls it, and after a week or two of my calling or stopping by every day the vet and staff assured me that I did not need to and that when Josey went into the imminent herd they would call me to let me know and that then Josey would start staying in at night. Well at 5:00 AM (the morning after my last phone call) we got the call ---- Josey had a bouncing baby colt with no notice or difficulties what so ever. My husband named him Harley due to the fact that all his buddy's were buying Harley's and he has horses instead. So now he goes around telling every one of them about his Harley. We think he is going to be a bay like Moorpark Image. He has two white hind legs and one front white sock to go with his star, stripe and snip on his head and lots of head-turning presence.

2005 - 2006 Cubbing and Hunting Season - Kilbline (Molly) and Michelle get out a few times with Loudoun Hunt West over the season as time and weather permits. Sometime Tulla Gold joins us with Guy DeCorte up. Molly and Tulla both seem to truly love to hunt. Both horses go placed anywhere in either field, they stay back and help with gates (of course the part they like best is catching up to the field), are courteous to hounds and staff and are available to give others a lead over fences. If you want to find the hounds all you have to do is look at Molly's ears, she is always listening for them. Molly knows when it is a hunt day and shivers with anticipation until I am up in the saddle and we are off. If you want to see muscle rippling Irish Draughts you just need to look at Molly or Tulla once the season is in full swing.

Kilronan Irish Draughts - 2005

4 - 6 November 2005 - IDHS(NA) Annual Horse Show. This was really a big event for us. We drove two trailers and trucks up for this show. Kilbline and Tulla Gold in one and Bridon Loughlara and Little Gem in the other. Brad Taylor came with us to show Little Gem and we all took turns (including Guy) showing Guy DeCorte's horse Tulla Gold. But this was really Bridon Loughlara's time to shine.
