Kilronan Irish Draughts is located in the northern tip of Virginia, within an hours drive of Leesburg, Middleburg, Upperville, and the Plains; as well as Potomac, Westminster, and Marlborough, Maryland. This is truly horse country; there are eleven hunts and enough horse shows, events, or trials to keep you busy every single weekend and all with in an easy drive. We show our horses at the Upperville Colt & Horse show, the United States Eventing Associations Future Event Horse classes, and the Irish Draught Horse Society of North America’s (IDHSNA) regional and national shows. We trail ride and hunt with Loudoun Hunt and Loudoun Hunt West.
We (Larry and Michelle Robbins) became involved with horses again after each of us took a twenty plus year sabbatical. In 2003, it became obvious that we were getting back to horses, and Larry suggested that if this were to be, he wanted to pick the breed. Neither one of us could have foreseen what was to happen when Larry chose the Irish Draught. We met our first Irish Draught at the IDHSNA National show held over Labor Day weekend at Morven Park, in Leesburg, Virginia and fell in love with this breed of kind, athletic, sane and sound horses. We were told about a mare for sale in New Hampshire by Brandy and Brianne Sells of Bridon Irish Draughts. The Bridon Irish Draught website is http://www.oakhillirishdraught.com/. A week later we were driving back from New Hampshire with our first purebred Irish Draught Mare, Kilbline (Molly) in a borrowed trailer.
To structure this endeavor a plan was developed to take this from a mare for Michelle to hunt, show, and ride to a business endeavor. Our plan was that we would add a mare a year until we reached the optimum number of three; and that each year one or two would be dedicated broodmares and one or two would be in training to compete, hunt, and trail ride. In 2004 we added Bridon Loughlara (Josey) and in 2005 we added Little Gem (Gem). Then in 2006 we had our first foals, Kilronan’s Image born to Josey and Kilronan’s Glenstone born to Gem. We have had two more foals in 2007 Kilronan’s Bravado (Bravo) born to Josey and Kilronan’s Killara (Lara) born to Molly. Molly is currently in foal to Dandelion Diamond Rebel and her due date is 22 March 2009, and Gem is in foal to Braveheart and her due date is 16 March 2009.
